ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The exploration of Italian coasts and seabeds continues by the research ship of the National Research Council “Gaia Blu”: the “PELASeam2” campaign, in progress until the end of November, is the continuation of the expedition started in 2024 with the aim of exploring two underwater mountains, “Vergica” and “Vavilov” ecosystems, and investigating the productivity of these ecologics Last November 11th from the port of La Spezia, the campaign “PELASeam2” sees involved on board for twenty days an interdisciplinary team of researchers and researchers in the study of two submerged territories still little known that, due to the peculiar characteristics of topographic and environmental, they represent a real natural laboratory to understand the dynamics of such ecosystems. Multiple activities include acoustic, molecular, optical, chemical and visual observations to examine biodiversity at various levels of the marine food chain in the immediate vicinity of these mountains, better understand the marine environment and develop strategies for sustainable management of marine resources and to counter the loss of biodiversity. The coordination of the expedition is of the Institute for Biological Resources and Marine Biotechnology of the National Research Council of Ancona (Cnr-Irbim), with Fabio Campanella in the role of capomissione.
Multiple scientific and technical collaborations with different bodies: the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council (Cnr-Ismar), the Polytechnic University of Marche, the University of Palermo, the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) and Fondazione CIMA. The project is funded by the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), Spoke 2 “Solutions to reverse marine biodiversity loss and manage marine resources sustainably”.
