Confitarma, Zanetti “Maritime transport is a strategic asset for the country”

GENOVA (ITALPRESS)- Today in Genoa a participation General Council of Confitarma, which celebrates the 125 years of the Italian confederation of the shipowners. Approved the restyling of the confederal logo that, as evidenced by the president Mario Zanetti “will enhance the propulsive value of an association engaged – today and in the future – to represent the Italian shipowning industry, always at the service of the Country, its productive forces and all the citizens. Confitarma collects a diversified merchant fleet in the different types necessary for industry and Italy and continues its course firmly”, he added.

“The current geopolitical challenges, starting from the Middle East crisis, the themes of energy needs and ecological transition, as well as the opportunities offered by new routes and global economic integration, confirm the marine transport as a strategic asset, in particular for Italy”, concluded Zanetti.

In the course of the work the main challenges affecting the national armament have been addressed. Particular attention was paid to the crisis in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic area for global energy supply, highlighting the activity of constant monitoring and the information contribution required to support the main press bodies.

It was also underlined the need to prevent the introduction of extradancies on transits, which would represent the dismantling of the principles of international law. Although it represents only about 2% of global emissions, maritime transport is already the most efficient way from the environmental point of view.

However, European policies of ecological transition – in particular the ETS system and the FuelEU – risk to compromise the competitiveness of the Italian shipping. Confitarma has restated the need to suspend or review the ETS mechanism and to allocate the proceeds obtained to the marine field.

Italian shipowning companies are doing their part, having invested already about 2,5 billion, with over 60 new ordered ships, 80% of which are prepared for the use of alternative fuels.

The urgency of action was highlighted on the Italian flag regime, which is now weighed down by more honest procedures and compliance with those of the main competing European flags, with direct impacts on the competitiveness of the system.
