ROME (ITALPRESS) – Consumer and business confidence fell in November. This is announced by Istat. Both the index of consumer confidence and the composite indicator of business confidence are thus estimated to be down (from 97.4 to 96.6 and from 93.4 to 93.1 respectively). Among consumers, views on the general economic situation and future economic situation in particular show a worsening: economic climate falls from 99.7 to 97.8 and future climate falls from 95.0 to 93.8. Smaller declines in personal climate (from 96.6 to 96.2) and current climate (from 99.2 to 98.7). With reference to businesses, the confidence index increases in manufacturing (from 85.8 to 86.5) and, especially, in retail trade (from 103.8 to 106.7) while it decreases in construction (from 103.9 to 101.5) and market services (the index goes from 95.2 to 93.7).
As for the components of the confidence indexes, in manufacturing, judgments on the level of orders improve while expectations on the level of production decrease; inventories are judged to be decumulating compared to last month. In construction, the balance of judgments on orders strengthens amid a marked deterioration in expectations on employment at the firm. Turning to the market services sector, there is a widespread deterioration in all components; however, in retail trade judgments and expectations on sales show a positive development, and the balance of judgments on inventories remains essentially stable.
“In November 2024, business confidence falls for the third consecutive month remaining at a low level since April 2021. The decline is due to deterioration in the market services and construction sectors,” is Istat’s comment. The consumer confidence index shows unfavorable developments mainly due to the worsening of both expectations on unemployment and opinions on the opportunity to buy durable goods in the current phase.”
