PAVIA (ITALPRESS) – “After the Cold War, Europe had stopped investing in defense believing that American protection was eternal and that the history of wars was far away. But the story comes back in a sudden way and often presents the account. The United States continued to invest and defend a nation force, an asset in geopolitical confrontation. American presidents, from Obama to the present day, began to tell us, unheard, that Europe should have taken charge of its security because the United States should have looked at the challenge of the Indopacific and China. This will be the century in which we will have to decide between the United States and China which will be the nation of reference”. The defence minister Guido Crosetto said this at the conference organized by Aspen Institute Italia in Pavia.
“Trump has strongly said what was a profound change for many years. We have entered a world where the great powers count more than the great democracies. It counts who has oil, defense, weapons, strong industry, energy more than those who have conquered over the centuries and somehow built more just societies,” he added.
“The challenge between the United States and China for strategic leadership in the 21st century is the framework within which the crises we are experiencing are also placed: from Ukraine to the Middle East, from the Sahel to the South China Sea. In this scenario Europe risks being an object of history and not a subject. For this reason we must learn to walk with our legs and not only in the defense sector – he added – Not against or competing with the United States, but having the chance to still have them as strong, aware and credible allies. But no one can guarantee the defence of Europe in the future if not Europe itself,” said Crosetto.
