Di Veroli breaks the ice and triumphs in Heidenheim

HEIDENHEIM (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – Davide Di Veroli is golden in Heidenheim. In the historic German men’s epee stage, the 23-year-old Roman from the Fiamme Oro won his first career World Cup victory. In the same city where six years ago, as a very young man, he achieved his first podium in the rainbow circuit, Di Veroli triumphed by beating Hungary’s Tibor Andrasfi in the final with a score of 14-13, in a heart-beating match that was decided at the last hit, in the extra minute. For the reigning vice-world champion and 2023 European champion, it is the second consecutive podium finish this season (he was third two weeks ago in the Doha GP), but this first on the top step inevitably has a special flavor, on a day that also saw, for Italy’s coach Dario Chiadò, the excellent performance of Gianpaolo Buzzacchino, ranked sixth. Di Veroli’s Golden Friday began with a clear 15-4 success over the U.S. Lioznyansky in the round of 64, and continued in the 32’s scoreboard by overcoming the Hungarian Bakos with a score of 12-11. In the round of 16, the Roman won 15-13 over Israel’s Cohen, thus entering the top eight. The Fiamme Oro fencer reached the certainty of a medal thanks to his success over Switzerland’s Fuhrimann in the quarters with a score of 15-9. But Di Veroli did not stop there: in the semifinals he won 15-12 over Ukraine’s Stankevych, then put the exclamation point on his first Modo Cup victory in the final against Hungary’s Andrasfi, won at the last breath by 14-13, making the Hymn of Mameli resound in Heidenheim. Instead, Gianpaolo Buzzacchino stopped just short of the podium. The Sicilian swordsman, back from yesterday’s qualification, beat first China’s Peng (15-6) and then Japan’s Yamada (15-7) at the start of the day. The Fiamme Oro athlete entered the “top 8” thanks to the decisive hit placed in the extra minute against Kazakhstan’s Kurbanov (14-13). The stop for Buzzacchino came in the quarterfinals against Egyptian Elsayed 15-6, an assault that sanctioned his excellent sixth place. Fifteenth place for Luca Diliberto, stopped in the round of 16 by Japan’s Kano. Enrico Piatti and Matteo Galassi finished 19th and 55th, respectively. Tomorrow will be the third and final day of competition in the men’s epee World Cup stage in Heidenheim: on Saturday in Germany space will be given to the team test with Italy of coach Chiadò who will take the platform with the quartet composed of Valerio Cuomo, Davide Di Veroli, Giulio Gaetani and Giacomo Paolini. Ten Italian women advanced to the main draw in the women’s epee World Cup stage in Barcelona. They were already admitted by ranking right Alberta Santuccio, Giulia Rizzi, Rossella Fiamingo and Federica Isola. Carola Maccagno and Lucrezia Paulis also qualified immediately after the group stage. Thanks to their successes in the preliminary round, Alessandra Bozza, Gaia Caforio, Alice Clerici, and Roberta Marzani also won a place in the main draw. Stop in the last match of the day for Sara Maria Kowalczyk while Gaia Traditi’s performance stopped in the preliminary tabellone from 256. Tomorrow in Spain the female swordsmen will shoot for the podium in the individual competition. – Photo Federscherma Press Office -(ITALPRESS).
