Did Trump call Putin seven times? Woodward and the October “surprise”

By Stefano Vaccara
NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – According to a new investigative book by journalist Bob Woodward, famous for being the author of the Watergate scoop that got Nixon to resign, former U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin as many as seven times since he left the White House, and the last time would be this year. Woodward wrote these claims in his upcoming book titled “War,” a dramatic account of the White House under Trump and President Joe Biden that details elements of their relations with foreign leaders. The book will be released on Oct. 15. The book details how Trump’s relationship with Putin continued as he launched his White House bid for reelection and in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Woodward recounts that Trump allegedly told one of his aides to leave his private office at Mar-a-Lago “so he could have what he said was a private phone call” with the Russian leader. The aide, who was loitering in a hallway outside while the two talked, told Woodward that Trump and Putin have had “maybe up to seven” phone calls since Trump left office in 2021. The account is credited to a single anonymous aide and provides no further details. In the famous movie “All the President’s Men” in which Robert Redford starred as Woodward with Dustin Hoffman next to him as Carl Bernstein, the journalist who co-authored the Watergate scoop, the scene in which the editor of the “Washington Post” forced the two young reporters to have at least three coincidental sources before they could publish the news remained famous. The Trump campaign did not respond when asked to comment directly on whether the former president had had conversations with Putin since leaving office. Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, in an emailed statement personally attacked Woodward and said the book consisted of “fabricated stories.” Trump then stated that Putin’s report was “false” and that Woodward had “lost his balls.”
