Died at 96 Jean-Marie Le Pen

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Jean-Marie Le Pen, who brought the far right back to the center of French politics, has died at the age of 96. This was reported by French media. Born in La Trinitè-sur-Mer on June 20, 1928, he was the leader and founder of the far-right political party Front National, which was founded in 1972 in opposition to the Gaullist party. A member of the National Assembly and for several terms in the Europarliament, Le Pen is known for his extremely conservative and reactionary positions, which have often led him to make controversial statements. He has run in several French presidential elections, making it to the second-round runoff against Jacques Chirac in the 2002 presidential election, when he got 17.79 percent. In the 2007 presidential election he got 3,834,530 votes (10.44%) in the first round, being excluded from the subsequent runoff that saw Nicolas Sarkozy win. After leaving the leadership of the Front National to his daughter Marine in 2011, he was expelled from the party in 2015 over long-established political differences. In August 2020, Jean-Marie Le Pen created an institute in his name to make archives tracing his political career available to the general public.
