ROME (ITALPRESS) – Matilde Lorenzi did not make it. The 19-year-old from Villarbasse, Turin, Italy, who was a member of the Army Sports Center and a member of the junior women’s team, died following a fall suffered yesterday during a training session the team was conducting on the Gravald G1 slope in Val Senales. Immediately rescued, she had been transported by helicopter to Bolzano hospital, where she later died. Lorenzi had made a name for herself last season by winning the Italian overall and youth title in super-giant in Sarentino, and also last year she finished sixth in downhill and eighth in super-giant in the junior world championships in Chatel, France. She boasted an 11th place in super-giant in St. Moritz in December 2023 as her best finish in the European Cup. “The Defense and Minister Guido Crosetto express the feelings of the deepest condolences and join in an ideal embrace to the family and colleagues of Corporal Matilde Lorenzi, an Army athlete and promise of Italian skiing, who tragically passed away following a very serious accident that occurred during a training session,” reads a post on X of the Ministry of Defense.
