It was made this morning, at the Blood Collection Center of the Garibaldi Centro Hospital in Catania, by the newly appointed corporate health director, Mauro Sapienza, who, alongside the first administrative acts and meetings of departments and wards of ARNAS, did not fail to testify his concrete closeness to the blood shortage problems that the Transfusion Center is facing. “I have been a donor for decades and I know that in a hospital company like this one that cares for more than two hundred thalassemia patients, has a general emergency room in the center of the city with an increasing number of accesses and has high surgical specialties, the blood resource is indispensable,” explained Sapienza, who has also taken on, with his new position, the leadership of the company’s Committee for the Good Use of Blood. “For the first time in at least 20 years we have had to resort to acquiring blood from the regions of Veneto and Lombardy,” adds the head of the Transfusion Unit, Santi Sciacca, “the reduction of surgical waiting lists has greatly increased consumption, and I am sure that the example of the new corporate health director, Sapienza, who follows that of Mayor Trantino and General Director Giammanco, will be very useful in promoting throughout the population of Etna, as well as in the nearly two thousand employees of our hospital, the donation of blood components.
