Disability, Mattarella “Building equitable society and valuing talents”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The affirmation of the rights of people with disabilities is a measure of the civilization of a people. This day provides an opportunity to assess the path taken so far by the Republic in the application of the principles of equality of citizens, enshrined in the Constitution.” This was stated in a note by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. “The 2006 United Nations Convention laid the foundations for a new approach, recognizing that the community is, all too often, lagging behind in welcoming diversity,” the head of state added. “The reform of the condition of disability in Italy, with its focus on independent living, personalized projects and labor inclusion, represents a valuable opportunity to build a society that is more equitable and respectful of the dignity of every person.”Its implementation will require constant commitment and strong coordination between the various institutional levels and civil society, with the direct participation of people with disabilities,” Mattarella further says. “Nothing about us, without us” is a fundamental principle that expresses the idea that no decision affecting the lives of people with disabilities can be made without their consent. “Inclusion is nourished by daily choices, based on the ability to enhance the talents and aspirations of each person,” the president of the Republic concludes.
