ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Investing in the talents and skills of each person makes our communities grow and strengthens the whole country. We need to see the potential and not the limits and change our outlook to move from a system linked to mere welfarism to the full enhancement of each person and the right of everyone to live a participatory life from the civil, social, political, recreational, sports, educational and cultural points of view.” Thus Disability Minister Alessandra Locatelli on the sidelines of the National Observatory on the Condition of Persons with Disabilities (OND), which she convened on the occasion of the International Day of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
“Giving people opportunities means improving the quality of life of the people themselves but also creating economy in our communities and in our country,” she stressed. “We have to believe in it. We can no longer afford to leave anyone behind. People want to give more, they want to be autonomous, they want to be an integral part of our societies, they want to be full and recognized citizens, and work is a fundamental tool. Through job inclusion we can really make the whole country grow.”
“No one can call themselves out of the issue of inclusion and respect for the rights of People with disabilities, because it affects everyone and touches the lives of so many families who must be adequately supported. I am thinking, in particular, of cohabiting family caregivers, people who love and care for their loved ones, who do not wish to be replaced but accompanied in this complex and delicate task,” Locatelli adds. “A proposal will soon be presented that will start with the cohabiting, and prevalent, family caregiver in order to guarantee differentiated and specific protections for all family caregivers. It is certainly a complex issue,” the minister concludes, “There are many aspects at stake, including the economic condition because as is well known, for the same income, a family within which there is a person with a disability is poorer. I am convinced we need a rethinking of services to involve and consider the needs of the family as well. This means activating innovative and flexible paths in the perspective of the “Life Project,” the heart of the reform on disability that we are implementing and that finally puts the person at the center of policies and supports, starting from his needs and his right to choose, as provided for in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”
