Duties, Lollobrigida “U.S. alliance at risk”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – 200 percent duties on wine could be triggered in a week’s time, “the prospect is alarming, but the U.S. administration seems to me to have already relaxed its position.” This was said by the Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, who in an interview with the newspaper “La Stampa” replied “of course, it’s normal” to the question of whether duties risk cracking the EU-US alliance.

“The EU is the only one entitled to negotiate on this front, and we fully support Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, who is now in Washington to negotiate. The important thing,” he adds, “is that that table does not turn into a multiplier of aggression. A virtuous compromise must be found, because only the common market can make us both stronger.” President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, speaking at “Agriculture is,” was tough on tariffs.

“They are culturally unacceptable,” Lollobrigida agrees. “Illogical, if they are applied between allies who should instead be growing together. The words of the Head of State are fully agreeable. Now there are skirmishes, with more or less understandable approaches, but the space for negotiation is open.”
