Duties, Tajani “Trade war doesn’t benefit anyone”

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – “In the area of trade, the government’s plan of action includes a series of initiatives in markets outside Europe, to allow Italy to continue to be the fourth largest trade power in the world and avoid damage from possible duties.” This was said by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on the sidelines of the “Forza Italia’s Justice Reform” convention at the Politeama Theater in Palermo.

“We are in constant contact with the European Commission, which has exclusive competence over the negotiation of duties,” Tajani continued. “It has been decided to wait two weeks before implementing countermeasures, it seems to me a prudent choice that allows us to negotiate: the trade war does not suit anyone. Wisdom is not weakness, but diligence and implementation of tools to protect our companies that in case of mistakes risk huge damages as far as exports are concerned: the U.S. market should not be abandoned, but neither should the European one that represents an extraordinary potential for our companies. However, we must work to explore new markets such as Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, the Philippines, Turkey and the Gulf countries.”

“Foreign policy is made by the prime minister and foreign minister, who represent the official positions of the government: the rest are personal initiatives, if a minister wants to talk to some political forces from other countries, that is legitimate, but Meloni and I give the political line,” Tajani later reiterated.
