Endocrine diseases, at AME congress focus on diagnosis and treatment

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Four million Italians suffer from type 2 diabetes. Four in 10 affected by excess weight, while one in 10 by obesity. An incidence per 100,000 population of 15-18 new cases of thyroid cancer for women and 5 cases for men. These are just a few examples of the impact of some of the endocrinological and metabolic diseases that will be discussed extensively during the XXIII AME National Congress – Update in Clinical Endocrinology in Rome. The event aims to provide medical and scientific updates of a high quality standard in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism, with a keen eye also on social phenomena, such as gender violence. The Congress aims to provide a high-quality medical-scientific update in the field of endocrinology and metabolism. An overview of the types of sessions of the CongressThe scientific program, elaborated by the AME Scientific Commission, ranges across multiple areas of interest, delving into all the novelties related to the diagnosis and therapy of endocrine-metabolic diseases, from the most common to the rarest ones. “This year’s scientific program of the Congress was very rich again,” recalled Renato C. Cozzi (outgoing president of AME, former Director of the SC Endocrinology Niguarda Hospital Milan) during a video message published on the AME website: as many as 11 training courses (Hands on), 8 plenary readings, 13 symposia, 13 mini-courses, the G-AME sessions on clinical cases and unpublished studies-prepared by younger Members who will thus have the opportunity to compare themselves with more experienced ones, sessions reviewing the literature published in the last 12 months in some areas of Endocrinology and Metabolism such as rare diseases (“This year in”), “Meet the expert” sessions, among which Gender Medicine should be mentioned, and refreshment courses in Internal Medicine, which are the link with daily clinical activity. Also noteworthy among the planned plenary sessions is the Joint Symposium with the European Endocrinology Society, which focuses, this year, on the ESE and Endocrine Society joint practice guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of glucocorticoid-induced adrenal insufficiency.”Plenary sessions included the one held immediately after the opening of the Congress, during which the state of play of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità guidelines in endocrinology and the Italian thyroid guidelines were reviewed. In addition, a session on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support the diagnosis and prognosis of certain diseases in Endocrinology and Metabolism could not be missed, with a discussion of the potential offered by advanced AI systems in transforming care in this area. “In addition,” Cozzi added, “the scientific content of the Congress this year is again enriched by the discussion of numerous research posters that will be discussed in the special session. Nearly 100 posters will be presented during the Congress, reflecting the scientific fervor that animates our society, and numerous prizes in the form of registration and reimbursement of expenses for participation in AME National Endocrinology Congresses, as well as monetary awards, will be available for the best scientific contributions recognized by an internal jury.”The AME has also been sensitive to social emergency issues such as that of gender-based violence and wanted to respond to this issue by focusing on training and awareness of its members, developing a “Hands on” on this issue-a training course for members aimed at teaching colleagues how to recognize and welcome women victims of violence. With this edition of the Congress, the term of Renato C. Cozzi as president of AME and the new presidency of Andrea Frasoldati (Director Complex Structure Endocrinology, Arcispedale S. Maria Nuova, Reggio Emilia) for the next 24 months is made official. In taking stock of his activities as president of AME, t. Cozzi was keen to point out that “…in the last two years, AME has experienced a continuous exponential growth in the number of members, consolidating its role as the representative of young Italian endocrinologists. Collaboration with the ISS has enabled the AME to contribute significantly to the compilation of national guidelines, improving the quality of care for patients with the most common endocrinopathies. The partnership with the European Society of Endocrinology represents a unique opportunity for young Italian endocrinologists to compare themselves with their European colleagues and to acquire new skills. “AME training projects in the next biennium: some previews from the president-elect, Dr. Andrea Frasoldati (director SC endocrinology Arcispedale S. Maria Nuova IRCCS-ASL Reggio Emilia) “In line with the main educational mission of AME,” says Frasoldati, “and keeping in mind the heterogeneity of interests of the audience of our colleagues who are members of the association, here are some of the topics we will pursue in the next biennium: 1) obesity, a topic declined not only from the point of view of pharmacological novelties but in the round, with a multimodal approach that takes into account prevention and the social and cultural aspects that this condition entails; 2) novelties in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer, in the light of the soon-to-be-published ATA (American Thyroid Association) guidelines, a sort of benchmark for those who deal with this pathology; 3) artificial intelligence, with the start of literacy courses on the subject initially reserved for a small number of members eager to understand the full potential offered by this new technological evolution; 4) diagnostic and therapeutic appropriateness in endocrinology, a much-felt issue whose implementation could bring concrete benefits both to the sustainability of healthcare spending and to the age-old problem of waiting lists.”AME was born from the need to aggregate those who work daily in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism in Italy and promotes initiatives aimed at its constant growth having as main objectives the improvement of care and the defense of Endocrinology as a discipline. In 2024 it had more than 2,600 members.
