Equalize, Renzi “Puzzling picture. Clarity must be provided.”

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “From the minutes emerging in these hours on the Equalize affair, a disconcerting picture comes out, made of relations between this private company and the secret services, with abusive interrogations of databases that in a civilized country should not exist.” This was said by Matteo Renzi, leader of Italia Viva, on the sidelines of the presentation of his book L’influencer at the Franco Parenti Theater in Milan. Renzi expressed closeness to the family of policeman Giuseppe Gallo, who died in recent days, stressing that “the human aspect comes first.” He then attacked the government for its handling of cyber security: “Premier Meloni has put at the head of the National Authority for Cybersecurity a prefect who has never dealt with these issues. I propose a different solution: give the post to someone who really understands them, like Nicola Gratteri.”

And again, they wanted to tail Jacobs and check Renzi. Now, tailing Jacobs is practically impossible since we are talking about an Olympic champion sprinter, let’s throw in a laugh. But the point is another: why is it that every time there is someone who has to check Renzi? I am the most scrutinized man in Italy, they put my bank account in the newspapers, arrested my parents, investigated half my family, and in the end I turned out to be cleaner than everyone else. The cell phone is not just a tool for making phone calls, inside are our messages, our memories, our bank movements. If someone takes it from you, it enters your life, and this cannot happen without a specific reason and without the authorization of the judicial authority.” On the Equalize case, Renzi reiterated the need for clarity: “We have hypothesized a commission of inquiry, but the real question is what is happening in this country? If a government authorizes preemptive wiretapping of a politician it is serious, if it does it on a journalist it is just as serious, because it touches democracy.”

Finally, the former premier raised doubts about an alleged link between statements by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Fanpage director’s wiretapping case: “In June 2024 Meloni said from Brussels that ‘if this is an instrument of political struggle, then everything changes.’ Six months later, the director of Fanpage is notified by WhatsApp that his phone was tapped with malware. I don’t say the government did it, but I ask: Was spying on a journalist authorized? Yes or no? And is it possible that only I am saying these things?”
