MALAGA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – The golden moment of Italian tennis continues: for the second year in a row, Italy will play in the final of the Billie Jean King Cup. On the fast courts of the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, it was the doubles that gave the Azzurri a 2-1 win over Poland that is worth the last act: Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, Olympic champions in Paris, defeated Iga Swiatek (favored over Magdalena Frech) and Katarzyna Kawa 7-5 7-5, coming back in the second partial from 1-5 down.
The semifinals had opened with Lucia Bronzetti’s success in the first singles match against the better-ranked Magda Linette 6-4 7-6(3); then, in a remake of the final at the last Roland Garros, Paolini had struggled for more than two and a half hours against Swiatek: in the end, the former world number one won 3-6 6-4 6-4, clinching her fourth win out of four against the Tuscan, albeit for the first time in three sets. For Paolini, redemption came in the doubles along with her now-tested partner, and so Italy, which a year ago was denied victory by Canada, now waits to know who between Slovakia and Great Britain will be the rival in Wednesday’s final.
