EU, Conte “800 billion rearmament plan is madness”

NAPLES (ITALPRESS) – “For peace we sit at the negotiating tables. Peace means you don’t wait for Washington to come here and impose peace on us.” M5s leader Giuseppe Conte said this on the sidelines of the ongoing Psi congress in Naples regarding the Ventotene Manifesto and how to achieve peace. “Peace,” Conte continued, “the turning point, we had to impose it. I don’t have to teach anybody anything. But, I mean, if you want to make war, and you don’t want to make peace, you don’t even sit at a negotiating table. Instead, Italy, Europe has to be a protagonist in this negotiating breakthrough. And today the result is paradoxical: you are starting a negotiating table. Europe, Italy, is not sitting down. We could have, by sitting there, better and more effectively protected Ukraine’s just reasons. Instead, we are out. What is the result, then? That we are cut off from everything. How do we react, hysterically in Europe? That is, the moment a negotiating table is started, we invest in 800 billion because we feel a threat and we feel it more and more looming and pressing, then we create a spiral of threats and counter threats? I think that’s crazy.”

“The M5s says no to this crazy 800 billion rearmament plan. We want,” Conte continued, “investments, instead, in health care. We want investments in schools, education, for our industry, our manufacturing, small and medium entrepreneurs, artisans who are closing. Yesterday I was in Mirafiori talking to Stellantis workers who are working only two days a month, taking benefits and social shock absorbers that obviously do not allow them to make ends meet. Industrial crises are growing all over the country. Today in Campania I am meeting other workers from companies in crisis. This is the emergency for the country. Don’t build missiles, don’t build tanks in the illusory quest to satisfy a need for security that instead will no longer give us security.”
