BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – The European Commission will establish a strategic steel dialogue aimed at charting a decisive course for the future of the European steel industry. The initiative underscores the Commission’s firm commitment to this strategic sector, recognizing its central role in innovation, growth, employment and the EU’s broader strategic autonomy. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“The steel industry is a key sector of the European single market,” she added. “At the same time, it is a sector of the utmost importance in the fight against climate change. The strategic dialogue will help develop a concrete action plan to address the unique challenges of this sector in the clean industrial transition. We want to ensure that the European steel industry is competitive and sustainable in the long term.”
“Europe has a plan for its industry: we need to produce more, we need to produce clean, and we need to produce European. Starting with our most strategic sectors, and steel is one of them,” explains Stephane Sejournè, Executive Vice-President of the EU Commission for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy. We must protect the steel sector from unfair foreign competition and strengthen the production of clean European steel. This is not only good for the steel sector. It is good for a whole range of other sectors that depend on steel. This action plan is therefore a key component of our industrial competitiveness and overall economic security.”
The dialogue will build on the foundation laid by the recently published EU Competitiveness Compass and the upcoming Clean Industry Pact. Key discussion points will include ways to improve competitiveness and circularity, promote clean transition, decarbonization and electrification, and ensure fair trade relations and an international level playing field.
