European Commission awards Fita and intergenerational project

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The Italian Taekwondo Federation wins a prestigious international award at the European Commission’s Be Active Awards, one of the most significant awards in the European sports scene, which celebrates the best European projects and initiatives dedicated to the promotion of sport. The federal project “Intergenerational Taekwondo – The Sport of Grandparents and Grandchildren” took second place in the “Across Generations” category, selected from more than 1,000 sports-related projects from across Europe. The award ceremony took place last night in Brussels. This achievement represents a certificate of merit for the Federation’s commitment to enhancing sports as a tool to unite generations and build a more cohesive society. The initiative, supported by the Department of Sport and Sport and Health, brought grandparents and grandchildren closer to taekwondo, demonstrating how sport can become a common language capable of strengthening family and social ties. The project involved more than 1,600 participants throughout Italy, registering a growing membership of athletes over 60. Launched with 30 Amateur Sports Associations, the program has now surpassed 50 adhering associations, including some Assisted Living Residences (RSAs). “This project perfectly embodies what grassroots sports should represent: an opportunity for everyone, without age limits,” said Fita President Angelo Cito. “Uniting generations through taekwondo means promoting values of inclusion, respect and collective growth. We are all proud of this achievement, which is only a starting point. My thanks go, first and foremost, to Minister Andrea Abodi for the support through this funding, as well as to all those who made the project possible. I hope that this initiative can continue in the future. The credit for this recognition by the European Commission is not mine, but that of all the associations and participants in the project, some of whom are over 90 years old. Meeting them and seeing their happiness thanks to the practice of taekwondo is a unique emotion for me.”- Photo Fita Press Office -(ITALPRESS).
