Ferrari F80, the Cavallino rampante’s new supercar

MARANELLO (MODENA) (ITALPRESS) – Today is a very special day for Ferrari: it is indeed the moment when the F80, a new chapter in the legendary history represented by the Prancing Horse supercars, is presented to the public and the press. The F80 will be produced in a limited series of 799 examples and will stand alongside cars such as the GTO, the F40 and the LaFerrari, going on to represent the technological and performance showcase of the best of what the Maranello-based company has to offer. Since 1984, Ferrari has developed a series of supercars that have brought with them technologies and innovations that have entered the public imagination. These cars, aimed at the Brand’s most passionate customers, have immediately become icons of their time, indelibly characterizing the history not only of the Company, but of the entire automotive sector. The latest, the F80, sets out to represent absolute excellence for a car with an internal combustion engine and uses all the latest technological solutions, starting with the latest generation of hybrid technology, to take the powertrain to an inimitable level. The architecture is designed to extract the maximum performance, starting from the carbon fiber chassis to the aerodynamics, never so extreme for a homologated car, to the new active suspension aimed at extracting maximum performance during track driving. However, uniquely in the panorama of current supercars, the F80 manages to combine these values with enough driveability to make it usable without compromise even on the road and with a more relaxed driving style. This characteristic has repercussions on all the technological and architectural choices, aimed at the pursuit of the objective, at first sight impossible, of creating a track super sports car that can be driven in the same way as a range car.In this way, the driver will use the car for longer while enjoying to the fullest its performance and the driving emotions it can confer. The architecture of the F80 has been taken to such extremes that it has gone so far as to devise a tapered cabin focused on the driver, while still providing excellent passenger room as well. The advantages of this choice are fundamental in terms of improved aerodynamic penetration and weight containment. The passenger compartment thus has a clearly perceptible single-seat effect, despite the fact that the car is homologated for two people, thus making it a car with an architecture that can be defined as “1+.” This choice stems from the need to decrease its width in order to obtain benefits on aerodynamics (drag reduction) and reduce weight. This concept is perfectly consistent with the racing world from which the car draws inspiration and technical solutions. The choice of powertrain, in line with the supercars that preceded the F80, is based on the current technological trend in motorsport: if GTO and F40 mounted a turbocharged V8 because in the 1980s Formula 1 cars used turbocharged engines, today in both Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship (WEC), turbocharged V6 engines are used combined with an 800 V hybrid system; therefore, the transfer of this architecture, using which moreover Ferrari won two consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans with the 499P, to the F80 was natural. The powertrain is enhanced by the inclusion of an electric turbocharger (e-turbo), for the first time ever on a Ferrari, which, thanks to the electric motor positioned between each of the turbines and the supercharger, achieves very high specific power and immediate response at low rpm. Aerodynamics plays a key role on the F80 and, thanks to, among other things, the movable wing and extractor at the rear, and the bottom, tri-plane and S-Duct at the front, it manages to generate 1050 kg of vertical load at 250 km/h. Performance is further emphasized by the active suspension that directly participates in the development of ground effect, the electric front axle that allows four-wheel drive to make the most of torque and power, and the new brakes with CCM-R Plus technology derived from the racing world. Like all the supercars that preceded it, the F80 marks the beginning of a new styling era with a more taut and extreme language that emphasizes its racing soul. The reference to motifs borrowed from the aerospace industry to emphasize refinement and technological innovation in design choices appears evident. However, there is no lack of nods to its celebrated progenitors, recalling its very important lineage.
