Fincantieri, launched the world’s first cruise ship powered by hydrogen

ANCONA (ITALPRESS) – Today, at the yard of Ancona, the launch of “Viking Libra”, the new cruise ship that Fincantieri is building for the shipwreck Viking. The unit will be delivered at the end of 2026. The ceremony was attended by Gilberto Tobaldi, Director of the Fincantieri Establishment of Ancona, and members of the Viking team.

With a gross tonnage of about 54,300 tons, a length of 239 meters and the capacity to accommodate up to 998 passengers in 499 cabins, “Viking Libra” will be the first cruise ship to the world powered by hydrogen and will be equipped with a propulsion system based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells.

The project has been developed with a strong focus on environmental aspects: the unit will be able to operate in zero-emission navigation, making it possible to access also marine areas particularly sensitive from the environmental point of view.

The collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking, started in 2012, continues to represent a solid partnership in the crocieristico field. Considering the ships already ordered, the contracts signed and the options agreed in recent months, whose effectiveness remains subordinate to the usual financing conditions provided by the market, the overall portfolio between the two groups reaches today 26 units.

Extended on an area of about 360.000 square meters, the yard of Ancona has a production capacity of 60,000 tons of gross tonnage, of lifting systems with capacity up to 500 tons and a monthly capacity of construction of the hull pairs to approximately 1,200 tons.

Investments are also planned to further increase the production capacity of the site. Since 2009, more than 20 ships have already been delivered, thanks to the daily commitment of approximately 3,700 workers.

“The site plays a strategic role within the Group’s industrial network – explains Fincantieri in a note – and is involved in the Operations Excellence program, which aims to introduce advanced technological solutions to improve production efficiency and quality of work, from automation to collaborative robots, to the use of augmented reality and artificial intelligence.”.
