Fishing, seizures and fines of one million by the Coast Guard

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Coast Guard operation in the national territory to protect the fishing supply chain. The total results found are 746 administrative and criminal offenses; 233 fishing gear seized;
fines amounting to over 1 million euros;
approximately 200 tons of fish product seized.
In particular, the Rome-Fiumicino Coast Guard, together with ASL Rome personnel, seized 670 kg. of expired fish product at a wholesale distribution center in Rome, intended to be distributed to ethnic restaurants: a real “outlet” of fish product, where they could buy frozen products – to be fed to the public – close to expiration, at obviously lower prices, to beat the competition, without guarantees of quality and wholesomeness and with serious risks for citizens.
(ITThe Bari Coast Guard, following the monitoring of an e-marketing activity carried out on the main digital platforms (such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok), carried out a seizure of sea urchins for lack of traceability, likely the result of poaching in Apulian waters (where there is a regional ban); in addition, following a targeted intelligence activity, including night stalking, the Bari Coast Guard seized 10 kg. of dates of the sea from two poaching fishermen, who were referred to judicial authorities.
The Ravenna Coast Guard, in monitoring social platforms, spotted a video, which went “viral,” of the owner of an ethnic restaurant working on the street intent on the “unusual” activity of cleaning a tuna. Following checks carried out by Coast Guard personnel inside the restaurant, in the center of Bologna, untraced frozen fish product was traced and therefore seized.
The Livorno Coast Guard seized at a fish market in Prato about 70 specimens of the species called “Chinese crab,” the keeping of which in the live state and marketing of which is prohibited because it is on the European list of highly invasive species. In addition, following checks at wholesale and retail outlets, the Livorno Coast Guard seized 1,250 kilograms of untraced and expired fish product;
The Palermo Coast Guard, following a social network monitoring activity, and in particular after noticing a person advertising the sale of seafood products on the social platform “TikTok,” seized 545 kg. of various seafood products, lacking the mandatory traceability information, which were being sold illegally on the road. The lack of traceability and therefore the impossibility of defining its origin also led to the discarding at sea of 40 lobsters found and considered, upon inspection by health personnel, to be still alive and viable; in addition, following the inspection at a storage center, the Palermo Coast Guard seized more than 30 tons of expired fish product.
