With passion, dedication and a tireless desire to help others. On the front lines, building bridges between cultures. Luca Attanasio sacrificed his life for that land battered by conflict, hunger and poverty. Until the last of his days he was committed to humanitarian programs in support of international cooperation for the development of Africa and to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable people.”
Our ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed on Feb. 22, 2021, by an armed commando; Carabiniere chosen Vittorio Iacovacci and driver Mustapha Milambo also lost their lives in the attack. “Their memory is alive in the Republic and constitutes an example of dedication to the service of institutions in building peace among peoples,” the words of Zakia Seddiki Attanasio, Luca’s wife and president of the Mama Sofia Foundation. “It is precisely the man of the institutions that we celebrate today, his sense of the state, as well as the passion and love with which he carried out his work. His memory is not only remembrance, it is living legacy, his memory and legacy are a precious heritage for the whole of Italy, a valuable example that deserves to be guarded with respect and responsibility. Peace is a daily commitment that comes from the hearts of all of us, the future is nourished by trust and not by fear.”
In a message, Antonio Tajani, minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and vice-president of the Council, spoke of “the highest example of courage and dedication to service, diplomats and carabinieri, Luca’s exemplary story and is that of a symbiotic relationship between these two categories of servants of the state, who put before everything the commitment to honor the institutions they represent.”
Giuseppe Valditara, Minister of Education and Merit emphasized that “remembering Ambassador Attanasio today is not just about honoring the memory of a servant of the state, it is reductive to circumscribe the value of his example, to their sacrifice unites us with a feeling of gratitude, the memory of Luca cannot and should not be resolved in a commemoration because his story still speaks to us, it is a tale of life, commitment, and future, today the light of his commitment continues to shine thanks to the Mama Sofia Foundation.”
For Undersecretary of Defense Isabella Rauti, “their sacrifice reminds us, once again, of the dangers faced by those who serve our country, those who strive to promote peace and stability, and how high a price is sometimes paid to build peace, no sacrifice will be forgotten. Italy has always been engaged in peace missions and does so to promote dialogue, to break down walls and build bridges.”
