ROME (ITALPRESS) – “With inflation under control, good employment trends and rising thirteenth-month bonuses, Christmas consumption is expected to show more vibrancy than last year. This outlook, also confirmed by the good performance of Black Friday, gives hope for more robust growth in 2025.” This is how Confcommercio President Carlo Sangalli comments on the analysis of the Confederation’s Study Office on Christmas thirteenth and Christmas consumption presented today. According to the analysis, in fact, there will be a good month of December for purchases and consumption, with traction throughout the last quarter of 2024 (+6.6 percent from the account of 13esimes), the average consumption from thirteenths per family of 1,906 euros compared to 1,788 in 2023. Growing volume of thirteenths due to increase in employment (+420 thousand over 2023 and +848 thousand over 2019 in the first 10 months), new retirees enter with better contribution histories, maintenance of decontribution also in 2024 (worth €1.3 billion current on 13me as net effect), about €400 million extraordinary bonus, end of inflation.
“We expect growth in the volume of both gross and net thirteenths, we expect growth in average consumption from thirteenths from both employees and the self-employed. There is no denying that we potentially have an important volume of business,” explains Mariano Bella, director of the Studies Office, recalling that there is “a close link between the dynamics of consumption, GDP and achievement or failure with respect to public finance targets, consumption depends a lot on the month of December and, if it goes well, it would allow us to enter a positive statistical drag in 2025.”
In addition, Italians spent 4.1 billion on Black Friday with a +2.5 percent growth. Based on the most authoritative market research, we consider about 40% of adult Italians involved: therefore, just under 20 million Italians would have purchased spending 220-230 euros per head; estimates are derived from a downward correction of self-reported purchase (up from 60% to 67%) and average spending, according to ex-post evaluations made in the past; half of the above purchases would be anticipations of Christmas spending (mainly gifts in the proper sense); despite the “substitution” effect a good black week bodes well for December consumption. Average per capita spending on Christmas gifts grows to 207 euros compared to 186 euros last year. Total spending stands at 9.8 billion for 2024 compared to 8.1 billion in 2023.
