Fornero in London “To stem brain escape, you need long-term policies”

LONDRA (INGHILTERRA) (ITALPRESS) – “The highest pension promises are written on the sand. Career prospects are needed in the labour market, with adequate wages, favoured by long-term policies to help bring back young people who decide to expatriate and make them stay.” Elsa Fornero, former Minister of Labour and Social Policies in the Monti government and now professor of Economics at the University of Turin, took part in the opening day of the Italian Symposium 2026, the event organized annually by Italian students abroad gathered in the United Italian Societies.

Speaking to the students hosted by the London School of Economics, Fornero warned against populist temptations: “It is necessary to react to those who promise higher pensions, asking who will pay the bill. There is a need for dialogue and understanding of the real needs of citizens, present and future”.

The problem of the escape of brains abroad could not fail in the face of an audience of Italian students in Britain: “What is missing to convince young people to return? Italy has a great problem: in terms of economic growth we are constantly behind most European countries. We have to consider that our demography plays against growth. It serves an inclusive and dynamic labour market, involving young people, women but also people who at 55 are struggling to find work. Dynamic means that despite losing work is a dramatic experience, it is important to have confidence that there is economic assistance in the immediate future and help to find new employment.” Fornero defended the reforms he had introduced as a ministra: “There are people who stop me on the street saying they hated me, but then they understood the reasons for those choices.”.
