Foti “The majority will not divide, aid to Ukraine serves peace”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – As “has always done”, Italy “will continue to help Ukraine”, to reach a peace that is “just and lasting”, not an unconditional surrender that would expose “the same Europe to serious dangers of integrity, with a Russia that has so far been very aggressive”. Thus, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, Tommaso Foti, Minister for European Affairs, the Coesion and the Pnrr, convinced that “the majority will show itself united as it has always been” on the issue of aid to be approved at the end of the year “unlike the opposition, which from wide field on these issues is a mined field”. In any case, the Meloni government will insist on “proposing solutions for peace, without unnecessary retroscene and staged it in doubt”.

“What are we talking about? They look at facts not only relevant to envy against the premier, which is doing well,” says Foti, who adds: “One of the qualifying and qualified elements of what could be a plan of peace, was born from our proposal a few months ago: to broaden the safeguards of article 5 to Ukraine, which allow NATO states, including Usa, to intervene in case of attack. And Zelensky himself gave notice to our premier of a job, in favor of his country, extraordinary. Not only: 5 months ago we hosted the international conference for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a fundamental step for today and tomorrow”. “The aids – he emphasizes – do not serve to continue the war, but to foster the peace process, and because peace really comes you must be in two: so far we do not see great readiness of Russia, to use an euphemism: launch 1,200 missiles in one day with an attempt to hit 90% of civilian targets.”.

To the question if Zelensky should perhaps grant more, he answers: “In a peace agreement everyone gives something, but it is not peace if there is made unconditional. Europe cannot afford to have at the borders situations of total instability such as to make fear of what the general secretary of NATO hypothesized, that is, that there is a fear of Russian attacks in Europe.”.

And with regard to the statements of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, comments: “No one can afford to pull the head of the state for the jacket. Mattarella was very clear in the analysis of the situation, and those words explain why FdI, who was also against Russia’s attack on Ukraine, supported the position of the Draghi government to stand with Kiev. For the first time since 1945 Europe has faced a war of aggression against a country that is part of Europe. And it is also good that the path is accelerated because Ukraine enters the EU, although now logically the parameters are not all respected because of the war. As it is necessary that Europe and the US remain united, without tears.”.

“There are too many ‘pacifintì and too many furbi – adds -. The money we needed to make Italians better spent more money to renovate luxury castles, not us. But if you want a future of freedom, and also of our society – hospitals and schools are always the first goals of conflicts – you must have an adequate defence to the challenges of the future, from cybersecurity to disinformation. What do we do, stand still, marginalized? ”.

“We,” Foti recalls, “we voted to take time limits to the blocking of Russian assets, we did so not to divide Europe. But we are very careful: This decision was taken by a qualified majority, and is a tear to European rules, a dangerous precedent. So it hurts Europe, which would need serious reforms, as written also in the reports of Dragons and Letta and not only brutally said by Trump.”.

Then, on the maneuver, he explains: “It’s a little girly story for which a financier is good only if he abounds in resources. Between 2020 and 2030 we have at our disposal 134 billion for the Coesion, with the ninth and tenth tranches of the Pnrr we will have obtained another 194. It’s like having 30 billion a year for each financial year, with the advantage that we, keeping the accounts in place, can today have a spread of 70 points, so less spending on interest on debt. This is a strong policy, and it is the Meloni government.”.
