From Edison “A home for young people,” social housing for recent graduates

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Edison announces “A Home for Young People,” a company social housing plan for recent college graduates offering them the opportunity to live in their own home close to their place of employment and start on a path to personal and professional autonomy. The initiative is part of a broader commitment by Edison as a responsible operator that provides younger people with a three-year development and training program, working arrangements that ensure a balance between personal and professional life, a pay dynamic that rewards merit, and a supplementary welfare system, from September enriched by the “A home for young people” initiative. “Today, more than half of young recent graduates who decide to go abroad or move to other cities do so for reasons that are mainly economic in nature. This is especially the case in metropolitan cities where, the cost of living relative to the salary actually received, represents an economic balance that is difficult to achieve. Thus, the solution to the housing problem has a decisive bearing on the decision to stay or leave. For a company like Edison, which has always placed at the center of its long-term strategy the investment in young recent graduates – today a community of more than 160 people -, it is imperative to strengthen the value of the economic package offered at the hiring stage and also improve its growth dynamics in the first years of employment, but it is not enough. That is why we supplement it with a specific proposal that represents a concrete and relevant corporate contribution and support to the solution of the housing problem. With this new policy dedicated to young recent graduates, we offer a professional development project and at the same time a concrete help to think and start a sustainable future and personal life project in the city where they work, in any city of the Italian territory and regardless of the type of degree obtained,” says Giorgio Colombo, HR and ICT Director of Edison. The plan “A home for young people,” is aimed at recent graduates who do not have housing other than in their home town. To them, Edison gives the opportunity to rent a furnished two-room apartment in an area that is within half an hour of their place of employment and connected by public transportation. An external partner specializing in real estate leases takes care of the search, identification and contractual and administrative management of the housing lease as well as all utilities related to it. The young person is required to pay a monthly expense contribution which, considering also the utilities to be paid by him or her, is considered sustainable and has a value not exceeding one third of the net monthly salary. The share of rent that the newly hired person incurs is significantly lower than the average market price for the type of housing proposed and applies to all Edison locations throughout the country. Edison neutralizes the differences between housing costs in different cities, thus ensuring equal opportunities for new graduates throughout Italy. The housing support is recognized for a duration of three years, at the end of which the employee can take over the lease or, if necessary, decide to make a purchase proposal.Committed to confirming itself among the leading national operators in the energy transition by contributing to the decarbonization objectives of the Next Generation EU and Italy’s PNNR, Edison expects to hire about 300 people per year, according to a time progression that accompanies the implementation of the investment program defined in the strategic plan to 2030. About 50 percent of the hires are oriented on young graduates and recent graduates, mainly with educational backgrounds on STEM disciplines, 60 percent of whom will be placed at the locations and territorial plants hosting the new investments. The development of the hiring plan makes it possible to predict that the female component will account for a 40% share of the newly hired staff with tertiary education curricula.
