TORINO (ITALPRESS) – The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Politecnico di Torino signed a financing agreement up to a maximum of EUR 97.5 million to support a broad restructuring, redevelopment and construction of new modern and sustainable infrastructures. The initiative aims to strengthen the quality of teaching, research and innovation, as well as the energy efficiency of the campus, consolidating the role of the University as a reference scientific pole at national and European level.
“In investing in modern and sustainable universities means investing in the future of young people and in the competitiveness of the country,” said Gelsomina Vigliotti, EIB Vice President. “By supporting the Politecnico di Torino, one of the Italian excellences in engineering and innovation, we contribute to improving the competitiveness of the country and promoting the green and digital transition.”.
The project includes new construction and redevelopment of university buildings in the city of Turin, for a total of over 67,000 square meters of modern spaces dedicated to teaching, research laboratories and development and innovation activities. The new infrastructure will improve the conditions of study for students and work for academic staff, as well as create more sustainable and energy efficient environments.
“This result was also possible thanks to an action of progressive improvement and management of our budget that realizes methods and models of analysis and management control in support of the building development activities of the Polytechnic of Turin.” recalls General Manager Vincenzo Tedesco. “The athenaeus has therefore been credited as a credible partner of co-financing by EIB, under a clearly positive rating compared to the past, placing itself firmly as a social investment actor. In addition, we have introduced, within the administrative structure, time planning and monitoring mechanisms and costs for strategic projects subject to EIB financing.”.
In particular, the project will strengthen research and innovation skills in strategic sectors for the economy, such as aerospace and advanced manufacturing, helping to improve competitiveness at national level and to create new opportunities for collaboration between universities, enterprises and research centres. This financing is part of the EIB’s broadest commitment to Italian universities. In the last ten years, the European Union Bank has supported several universities in the country, with funding for more than 700 million euros for the modernization and energy efficiency of campuses, while helping to improve the educational and research offer.
