However, I remember that women have done an extraordinary feat, they have written the history of world tennis.” Thus, at the microphones of ‘Radio Anch’io Sport’ on Rai Radio 1, Tathiana Garbin, captain of the Italian women’s national team, on top of the world in Billie Jean King Cup. “It was a team victory, all the girls brought a uniqueness of their own to this beautiful trip,” explained the former Venetian tennis player, “Each of them captured what is the team spirit. For me and for Filippo Volandri, it is not easy to exclude great champions who expect to play. The choices are difficult, but we have the knowledge that we have amazing kids who understand the importance of the event and put aside personal value for team value. We are really proud of these boys and girls.” The blue team, Garbin explained, “is very diverse. We have the extraordinary experience of Sara Errani, she plays with an uncommon strategic intelligence. We have Jasmine Paolini’s arm, she has incredible strength and explosiveness, also in her way of seeing life. Lucia Bronzetti is a girl who grew up in a beautiful family with extraordinary values, she has an emotionality that shines through when she plays. Elisabetta Cocciaretto is very young, square, diligent, careful, takes time away from her opponents and plays a little differently than the others. And then Martina Trevisan who has incredible sensitivity and game vision.” The 2024 has been legendary for Italian tennis perhaps also because of work that started from afar: “I don’t want to take credit that I don’t have, because these kids are coached by very high quality professionals during the season. It’s a project that has come from afar, I like to compare it to a growing seedling, you have to give it time to mature and grow, then the fruits of the harvest are always sweeter. But you have to know how to wait and seize the right moment.” November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: “A lot of work needs to be done on this issue, a lot has already been done in Italy, but the process still needs to be improved. It is important to have an example like Billie Jean King: a former player who preferred to put aside personal successes for a future project and to grow women’s tennis.
