CAGLIARI (ITALPRESS) – Sardinia increases the places available for the specific training of future doctors of general medicine. The Regional Council approved the financing of 30 other scholarships for the three-year course 2026-2029, which is added to the 60 already provided by the notice published in recent months. Overall, therefore, the grants financed may reach 90.
The decision arises from the need to fully exploit the regional training capacity and, above all, to face the shortage of doctors of general medicine present on the territory. The measure arrives while the procedure for access to the course is still underway. 140 questions were submitted at the end of the notice.
The Region considers, therefore, reasonable to predict that the number of eligible candidates may be higher than the 60 grants initially put in competition, determined within the framework of the Coordination of the Health Commission, communicated to the Ministry of Health. From here the choice to intervene with own resources, without waiting for a new national programming.
“The legislation allows Sardinia to finance additional grants compared to the minimum contingent guaranteed by the State”, emphasizes the President of the Region and interim councillor of Health, Alessandra Todde. “The choice of 30 additional grants, compared with the initial 60, is part of the regional measures aimed at strengthening the system of territorial medicine. The problem of the shortage of family doctors is, in fact, one of the main issues for health care on the island. Increasing the number of young doctors who can access training means creating, in the medium term, a wider audience of professionals dedicated to general medicine.”.
For the Region, the first 60 scholarships represent a minimum endowment financed by the State and not a maximum roof to the educational capacity. The additional 30 bags will be assigned through the flow of the unique ranking of merit.
They will therefore not change the selection criteria, the admission requirements or the methods of testing. The notice will not be reopened and the scores or composition of the committee will not be modified.
Integration is carried out before the final approval of the ranking to allow to expand the number of beneficiaries without altering the selection rules.
If the eligible will be more than a number of seats initially available, it will run until a maximum of 30 more bags. In order to cover costs, a compensatory change is expected from the Indistinct Regional Health Fund, with an appropriation of 2 million and 295 thousand euros for the entire three-year training. The cost is calculated on the basis of 25,500 euros per year for each bag.
“With the new regional resources introduced – President Todde continues – we aim to expand in Sardinia the basin of professionals in training and not to disperse the skills and aspirations of suitable candidates who, in the absence of new grants, could remain excluded due to lack of available places. In the light of the 140 applications, the relationship between applications and grants initially available highlighted an application for access to higher education than the provision provided for by the call. In order not to risk losing these resources and enhancing the growing interest of professionals towards general medicine we chose to use regional financial autonomy by increasing the number of bags and therefore of places available.”.
