Giorgetti “Satisfaction with positive primary surplus, debt a burden”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “We realize a debt this year, a deficit well below what was promised and declared, which many thought was unattainable, of 4.3 percent. We will close at 3.8 percent, is that worth anything? And how is it worth anything. Because under that 3.8 percent is an even more important figure. Yesterday in the Commission I said that the primary surplus is not an economic goal, it’s a moral goal first and foremost, that is, not to create through our responsibility new debt compared to the debt we inherited. And therefore, the fact that we close or can close 2024 with a positive primary surplus is something that to me is morally satisfying, even before politically and even before economically.” Thus Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, speaking in the House chamber in reply to the debate on the Psb. “The real problem we have in Italy is debt. We face every budget maneuver with a burden of public debt that has now reached 3 trillion, with the related charges and interest. So when I, as a kind of mantra, keep repeating prudence, responsibility, caution, someone says: but this one maybe has a broken record. No, it’s not a broken record because I want to build a credibility to this government, to this country that will allow us, as it has allowed us, to lower the spread on Italian government debt. And what does it mean to lower the spread by 100 basis points? Just do a mathematical calculation on the amount of Italian public debt, in terms of savings in borrowing costs that can be made available, as pure oxygen for families and businesses,” the minister concluded.(ITALPRESS).-Photo: Photo Agency-
