Government summit on Ukraine “No to Italian military on the ground”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – A meeting convened by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was held this morning at Palazzo Chigi ahead of her participation in the Ukraine Peace and Security Summit scheduled for tomorrow in Paris. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani (via video link), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto.

“During the meeting, the commitment was reaffirmed to the construction, together with the European and Western partners and with the United States, of solid and effective security guarantees for Ukraine that find their foundation in the Euro-Atlantic context,” a note from Palazzo Chigi reads. “This was also on the basis of a model that could in part trace what is provided for in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, a hypothesis that is finding increasing interest among international partners. The meeting also made it possible to reiterate that no national participation in a possible military force on the ground is planned. Finally, the issue of the implementation and monitoring of the ceasefire was addressed, on which a possible role of the United Nations, which the Italian government has been supporting for some time, is gaining ground.”
