Greenland, the White House summit ended. The Danish Foreign Minister: “Acceptable not to respect territorial integrity”

WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – “For us ideas that do not respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right to self-determination of the Greenland people are, of course, completely unacceptable. So there remains a fundamental disagreement, but we agreed to disagree and we will continue to dialogue.” So Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Vivian Motzfeldt, respectively Foreign Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, at a press conference in Washington after the meeting with Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the future of the Arctic island, after President Donald Trump reiterated his intention to control it.

“We decided to form a high-level working group to explore the possibility of finding a common way. The group, in our opinion, should focus on how to deal with American security concerns while respecting the ‘red lines’ of the Kingdom of Denmark. We expect that this group will meet for the first time within a few weeks,” added Rasmussen.

The Copenhagen Minister recalled that “the United States already enjoys extensive military access to Greenland under the 1951 Defence Agreement. The United States can always ask to increase its presence in Greenland and for this reason we wanted to listen if they had any further requests. The president (Trump, ndr) clarified his vision and we have a different position. We, the Kingdom of Denmark, continue to believe that long-term security of Greenland can be guaranteed within the current regulatory framework, i.e. the 1951 agreement on the defence of Greenland and the NATO Treaty.”.

To the questions of journalists, Rasmussen stressed that “during the Cold War, at some point, the United States had 17 different installations and military bases. Now they only have one. Now the situation is completely different. The great difference is whether this should lead to a situation where the United States acquires Greenland, and this is absolutely not necessary. We have not succeeded in changing the American position, and it is clear that the president has this desire to conquer Greenland,” Rasmussen admitted, while reasserting that “this is not in the interest of the Kingdom of Denmark”.

Even more clear the position of the Moetzfeldt ministra: “We do not want the United States to control us.”.
