WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – “We know who Donald Trump is. He is a person who stood right here four years ago and sent an armed mob to the U.S. Capitol to overturn the will of the people on a free and fair election. An election he knew he had lost. Americans died as a result of that attack, 140 law enforcement officers were injured, all while Donald Trump sat in the White House watching the violence unfold on television.” Kamala Harris said this in Ellipse Park, Washington, at the last rally before Election Day. The choice of venue is no coincidence for the Democratic candidate, as it is the same spot where former President Donald Trump incited his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol nearly four years ago. Although the doors were scheduled to open at 3 p.m., supporters began lining up as early as the morning, buying all kinds of gadgets including hats, T-shirts and sweatshirts. No one left their seats until the doors opened, which was a few minutes later than planned. Taking the stage at around 7:30 p.m., Kamala Harris immediately gave a nod to the assault on Capitol Hill four years ago and reiterated the need for careful deliberations ahead of the Nov. 5 vote.
Among Kamala Harris’ supporters is a desire for historic change and a fear of a return to the past. “We need to make history because she can be the first black woman to become president,” says one supporter present at the rally. “We need to make sure the world knows how much women’s lives matter. Of the same opinion is another black girl who reiterates the importance of taking advantage of the possibility of having a woman president in the White House: “I think in our history we’ve never really been able to show our power like we are now. If Kamala Harris became president of the United States it would be a big step. Just think that at one time we women could not even vote.” The vice president is not the only one who keeps well in mind what happened four years ago on Capitol Hill, even among supporters there are those who remember that event well and those who are concerned about geopolitical issues and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“We’re facing some really scary things right now and we already have several problems domestically and internationally with having Trump as president again,” says one concerned Harris supporter. Opinion that is confirmed by another supporter, who showed up at the rally wearing a cat t-shirt that read “Harris”: “Today we are at the place where the assault on Capitol Hill began four years ago. It is important to be there in large numbers to give a message to the country.” With less than a week to Election Day, the situation is totally uncertain, polls are extremely balanced, but tensions are not subsiding. A pro-Palestinian rally was held at the end of the rally, temporarily blocking Harris supporters in the area affected by the rally.
