GIOIA TAURO (ITALPRESS) – A major blow to the illicit trafficking of fireworks was delivered by the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) with the cooperation of the Guardia di Finanza (Finance Police) in the run-up to New Year’s Eve. A ton of explosive material, lacking the necessary permits, was intercepted and placed under seizure. In particular, during customs control activities in the Port of Gioia Tauro aimed at combating the trafficking of counterfeit goods, several containers coming from China and presumably destined for Libya were stopped. The customs documentation of the cargo in transit through the Calabrian port indicated the presence of various types of items, but once the containers were radiogenically scanned using the equipment provided by the agency and following a physical inspection, it was determined that the shipment actually consisted of a veritable arsenal of pyrotechnics, cleverly concealed behind a cover cargo.Given the dangerousness of the shipment, the blasting operations followed a very delicate procedure already starting with the inventory activities of the goods; subsequently, on the order of the Court of Palmi, the Gioia Tauro Office involved the Naples Supply and Maintenance Center of the Italian Army, within which operates a highly specialized nucleus of bomb disposal experts deployed throughout the country. The destruction operations – which will be concluded in these very days – were carried out in an area that does not impede port activities.
