In 2025, 100 new Trenitalia regional trains worth 850 million euros

ROME (ITALPRESS) – One hundred new regional trains in 2025, for an economic investment of 850 million euros and more than 430 million estimated travelers. In figures, 2025 for Trenitalia’s Regional trains opens under the banner of growth in line with the FS Italian Group’s Strategic Plan 2025-2029.Thanks to the Service Contracts with the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, the service’s principals, 540 new-generation trains have been delivered in 2024, which, added to the 335 already purchased previously, brings the number of new trains in circulation to 875. This number is destined to grow since, with further deliveries scheduled until 2027, Regionale will be able to count on 1,061 new trainsets, equal to 80 percent of the entire renewed fleet, for a total investment of seven billion euros.Among the main novelties in force since January is automatic compensation for those who have purchased the Regionale Digital Ticket: in case of train delays, passengers will automatically receive – without having to make any kind of request – compensation for delays within 30 days.Also resuming, the new edition of “X-GO,” the loyalty program that, after the success of 2024 closed with more than one million subscribers, this year will make it easier to accumulate points as two will be awarded for every euro spent on travel.Finally, the “Viaggi in Regionale” initiative created in collaboration with Lonely Planet and dedicated to Italian landscapes to be discovered with the Line connections of the Regional. This is a guidebook that explores five itineraries (Tuscany Line, Trasimeno Line, Trabocchi Line, Salento Line and Taormina Line) that offer eno-gastronomic and naturalistic experiences in typical Lonely Planet style, to be reached comfortably by train also thanks to the Promo Italia in Tour that, in its 3 and 5-day variants, allows unlimited travel on Trenitalia trains.On the occasion of Jubilee 2025, to facilitate the travel of pilgrims who will reach Rome, the sale of Metrebus tickets on the Trenitalia APP has been activated, in collaboration with ATAC, to travel on public transport in the Capital and its metropolitan area. In addition, new rides have been added to the Leonardo Express with departures from Roma Termini until 23:35 and from Fiumicino Airport until 00:23.To encourage the use of the Regional also on the occasion of spiritual journeys and pilgrimages, Trenitalia has created – in collaboration with Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi – a travel book on the heritage of cathedrals, churches and shrines that can be reached comfortably by train. The publishing initiative focuses in particular on twenty destinations among the main places of worship.In 2024, there were 415 million regional passengers, 8 million more than in the previous year. About 45 percent of the total number of passengers chose the Regionale for leisure and tourism purposes.Among the most important milestones of the past year was the birth of the new Regionale brand, characterized by the renewal of the fleet under the banner of sustainability.The intermodal connections of the Link service of the Regionale – train+bus and/or train+ship – increased to about 200 throughout Italy, for an even more widespread service capable of reaching even locations where the train does not arrive.In addition, 2024 saw greater use of the Digital Ticket, which now accounts for 43% of one-way tickets sold and enables travel information to be received in real time.Finally, the activation of Tap&Tap – the new, fast, digital payment system – which, after Veneto, was also introduced along routes connecting with airports (Fiumicino, Turin, Cagliari and Palermo) and on the Florence-Pisa-Livorno and Turin-Bardonecchia lines.
