In East Rome a new antidoping laboratory “A place of excellence in the outskirts”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – It was an unused property in one of the peripheral areas of East Rome. Today it is the only Fmsi antidoping laboratory in Italy, among the 30 to the world accredited by Wada. In Via delle Rupicole, in the Torre Maura district, the new structure was inaugurated that will allow to analyze up to 25 thousand samples per year with a peak of 200 samples per day in case of great events, under the guidance of the scientific director, Francesco Botrè, and the deputy technical director, Xavier de la Torre.

“The fight against doping is a priority, we want a clean and safe sport environment, because sport practiced in a healthy way improves physical and mental health and is an antidote to youth discomfort that in Italy as in the world affects a growing group of young people,” Hozio Schillaci Minister of Health at the press conference. The intervention of Sport and Health thanks to a total investment of 17,2 million euros, provided by the law of budget 2024, has returned an abandoned property to a suburb.

“Having made it here is a challenge message in an area that needs excellence like this”, added Schillaci, who then left the word to the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi. “This is a constitutional place, in which article 33 finds daily implementation – he explained -. It needed a neutral place, for the tertiage of which an antidoping laboratory needs. We have identified a place of public ownership and decided to value less central areas, giving a sense that it was service and prestige to a part of the suburbs”, added Abodi.

Luciano Buonfiglio, President of the Coni: “We are and must be convinced that we are excellence, we aim to be protagonists. This institute makes Italian sportsmen quiet, because the coffin is put out. We must give certainty to those who want certainty.” For Marco Mezzaroma, president of Sport and Health, “this place is an excellent example of optimization of public resources, bringing here a place of excellence where of excellence for now there are not many is a meritorious decision”.

To make the honors of home number 1 of the Italian Medical Federation, Maurizio Casasco: “I wish, first of all, to thank the Government and the competent ministers for believing in this project. A thanks that I would like to extend to Sport and Health, which has acquired this site, taking care of all the construction and plant renovation works: thanks to the commitment of its management, it has managed to overcome every expectation, also regarding the times of completion”.
