In Milan Obesity Day Summit, one in eight people in the world is obese

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Milan hosted the Obesity Day Summit on obesity and the microbiota, a major national conference organized by the Order of Biologists of Lombardy to celebrate World Obesity Day.

The event, which took place in the Cloisters of San Barnaba, had a significant impact on medicine and public health, representing a historic moment in the fight against obesity. Thanks to the sponsorship of universities and scientific institutions, such as ATS Bergamo, e-Campus University, Coni Lombardia, Fondazione Don Gnocchi, Fondazione Irccs Cà Granda – Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Fondazione Valter Longo, Opl – Order of Psychologists of Lombardy.

The Summit had great relevance, not only for the very high scientific value that the speakers brought, but also for the message it conveyed: obesity is an issue that involves all of society, not just the medical field. With a rich and stimulating program, crucial topics such as obesity, the gut microbiota, and chronic noncommunicable diseases were covered, providing a unique opportunity for national and international discussion.

Scientific leaders Rudy Alexander Rossetto and Marcello Romeo, together with moderators Linda Marrè, Arianna Bettiga, Fabrizio D’Agostino, Andrea Maglioni, Manuela Meloni, and speakers who are experts in the field, have made each meeting a point of reference for the scientific community, helping to shed light on issues of primary importance, thus creating a dynamic and engaging stream of scientific discussions.

The Obesity Day Summit on Obesity and Microbiota also boasted a parterre of institutional figures who introduced the conference with their greetings and compliments, either in person or via video messages. Among them: Orazio Schillaci, Minister of Health with a letter of greetings, Marcello Gemmato, Undersecretary of State for Health with an extensive video intervention, not only of institutional greetings, much appreciated by all 260 participants ( event sold out) and by the President of the order who commented “An extraordinary message, dense with content of the highest value, managing to convey with clarity and responsibility a lucid and objective vision, without neglecting the technical and scientific depth that makes it an indispensable resource for those working in the field. A perfect example of authoritative and effective communication.”

Councilor Emanuele Monti, chairman of the IX Permanent Commission on Social Sustainability, Silvia Scurati, councilor of the Lombardy Region and contact person for the council intergroup on “Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyles,” with a video greeting, Elena Faini, lecturer at E-Campus University, and Dr. Valter Longo, director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC).

As well as, the President of Coni Lombardy Marco Riva and the newly elected President of the Order of Psychologists Lombardy Valentina di Mattei, through President Rossetto, and in person the President of the Interprovincial College of Midwives of the 8 provinces of Lombardy, Nadia Rovelli and President Diego Catania of the TSRM and PSTRP Order of 7 provinces of Lombardy.

Numerous reflections were reported, but noteworthy were those presented by President Rudy Alexander Rossetto, who opened the congress with an alarming figure: “One in eight people worldwide live with obesity,” highlighting the urgency of addressing this global health emergency. Topics such as the risks of obesity in childhood, the connection with cardiovascular disease, the relationship between nutrition and health, and eating disorders were then discussed during the two days.

Not only speeches: the congress was full of highlights, such as the official presentation of the scientific journal PHOTO 51, currently the only official indexed scientific journal and first among the Orders of Biologists on a national scale. Created for the entire scientific ecosystem and realized with the contribution of mediAbout, the journal aims to be a key tool for the dissemination of relevant scientific articles. On the occasion of the event, the first issue, accompanied by the presentation of the scientific board, was exclusively distributed in hard copy. As stressed by President Rossetto, “it is not a journal ONLY for Biologists, but a journal OF Biologists for the whole scientific ecosystem.”

As well as the historic live signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Lombardy Order of Biologists and ASMEL (Association for Subsidiarity and Modernization of Local Authorities), signed by the President of the Lombardy Order, Rudy Alexander Rossetto, and the President of ASMEL, Francesco Pinto. The Lombardy Order of Biologists will implement an advanced application module to enable local governments to quickly and accurately identify qualified professionals within the Register.

This will enable targeted searches for skills, specializations and availability, facilitating an immediate match between supply and demand for specific professional skills. On this occasion, the new and only nationwide platform for Biologists called “Biologists InComune” was also launched.

The Obesity Day Summit strongly reiterated the importance of a collective effort to address obesity and its comorbidities. The role of the Order of Biologists of Lombardy is fundamental in trying to keep the situation under control, constantly educating and informing people, and making everyone aware of the need for active prevention. But not only that, everyone plays a role in this fight, and collaboration is the key to achieving concrete results. “Choosing prevention as a common priority is a winning choice for everyone’s well-being. Together, within our network, we can make a difference, joining forces and knowledge to create a healthier and more aware future for the new generations, who are the future of the nation,” concluded OBL President Rossetto.
