ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The statue of the Elephant of Gian Lorenzo Bernini in Piazza della Minerva in Rome was victim on Monday around 21:00 of a probable vandal act. An elephant has been removed. The fragment has been recovered and, thanks to a restoration, will soon return to its place. The investigators, even through the vision of the cameras in the area, are investigating to understand whether it is a natural surrender or a stunt.
“It is inadmissible that once again the artistic and cultural heritage of the nation must suffer such serious damage. A few days after the inauguration of the great exhibition on Gian Lorenzo Bernini at the Galleria di Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini, to be targeted is his Elephant in Piazza della Minerva. The Ministry of Culture, through the Special Superintendence of Rome dedicated to the high surveillance of artistic goods, will make its contribution to the Capitoline Superintendency, on which the monument depends, for the restoration of sculpture: one of the most significant symbols of the Capital, struck by an absurd act of barbarism”. The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
