Increasing number of patents filed by Stellantis in Italy

TURIN (ITALPRESS) – The number of Patents that Stellantis files in Italy and in general at the European level and in the other international countries in which the multinational company operates continues to grow. Specifically, in 2023 266 Patents were filed in Italy, while in the first ten months of 2024 they grew by 27 percent to 339. It is in this context that Stellantis Italia’s participation in the exhibition “The Italy of Patents: successful inventions and innovations,” which opened yesterday in Rome at Palazzo Piacentini and was organized by the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy to celebrate both the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Patent and Trademark Office and the 550th anniversary of the publication of the first Patent Statute, promulgated by the Republic of Venice in 1474, should be placed.Stellantis Italia is participating in the initiative, along with other Italian industrial excellences, through the CRF Research Center in Orbassano (Turin) by presenting two patents: the Common Rail Injection System (from 1995), in the historical section, thanks to which in the past years it has been possible to achieve greater engine efficiency, reduce polluting emissions and improve fuel consumption; and the more recent In-Car Integrated Charging Cable (from 2022), an innovative solution previewed on Fiat Grande Panda, which intends to simplify the charging process at columns and stations equipped with “Mode3” connector. This solution will also be adopted in the future on other BEVs from Stellantis. “In recent years we have witnessed a considerable increase in the number of patents filed by Stellantis, especially in Italy where filings have increased almost twentyfold,” comments Marco Vassallo, CRF General Manager, “a sign of the importance attached to research and development activities and the crucial role that technological innovation plays in the automotive sector. The significant growth in patents filed is a clear indicator of Stellantis’ strategy to consolidate its leadership position through the development of cutting-edge technologies in the fields of electrification, intelligent vehicles, new propulsion systems and autonomous driving. Stellantis sees patents and intellectual property not only as an added value, but also as a key strategic lever for defining more efficient and sustainable mobility solutions and building a long-term competitive advantage in the global automotive market. “Globally, there were 2438 Patents filed in 2023, up substantially from 1867 in 2023. In the first 10 months of 2024, Stellantis has already registered 2245 of them. “Stellantis,” Marco Vassallo concludes, “considers patents to be a value, so this approach will be gradually spread among Group locations. However, the spin-offs on the territory in terms of research and development activities are not proportional to the number of patents filed: in a multinational context and with a global engineering entity such as Stellantis, the country in which a patent is filed does not matter in the least, which can be extended, as is often the case, internationally. The trend in recent years shows substantial growth since the birth of Stellantis, and this is a very positive aspect, especially for Italy.”
