Inflammations, from research to skin in the podcast Science Calling

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The second episode of Science Calling is available, the podcast conducted by Myrta Merlino and produced and produced by Edulia, Sapere Treccani, online on Spotify, Apple Podcast and Amazon Music. Born to tell about scientific research as a cultural and civil infrastructure, able to make accessible complex areas and affect people’s lives, Science Calling is divided into a series of eight episodes dedicated to transformations that cross science, health and innovation. The second episode Inflammations: the red thread, made with the non-conditional contribution of Incyte Italia, is dedicated to one of the most articulated territories of contemporary biomedical research, that of chronic inflammations, observed from their skin manifestations. The episode takes shape around a conversation between Myrta Merlino and Maddalena Napolitano, dermatologa and professor at the University of Studies Federico II of Naples, which accompanies the listener within the evolution of a field in which biology, clinical practice and translational research intertwine in an increasingly tighter way. In the story, the skin emerges as a privileged point of observation: it makes visible the effects of inflammation and allows to more clearly grasp the link between the immune system, molecular signals and quality of people’s lives. Starting from this point of view, the episode crosses some of the main chronic inflammatory diseases of the skin, such as atopic dermatitis, vines and suppurative hydrosadenitis, returning them as different expressions of biological mechanisms partially shared and partly specific. The speech therefore moves away from the episodic treatment and focuses on the possibility of affecting the trajectories of the disease, intervening with therapeutic options specifically developed for that particular patient-profile, depending on the severity of the disease and the clinical history of the patient. The research shows in fact how the understanding of subtle differences between similar clinical paintings is redefining the very idea of care, increasingly oriented to a precision approach. In this context, a central role is assumed by molecular research and the study of signalling routes such as JAK-STAT, today recognized as a fundamental hub in the regulation of the inflammatory response and as a strategic target for the development of targeted therapies. It is in this perspective that, in the words of Myrta Merlino, takes shape the guiding image of the episode “for years we moved in this maze following generic paths. Then molecular research began to trace a new fil rouge”. The episode thus returns an idea of research far from shortcuts or immediate solutions: a work that proceeds by accumulation, verification and continuous correction, and that finds in the understanding of the mechanisms its own point of orientation. In this sense, Inflammations: the red thread tells the research as a practice of responsibility: a way to make complex systems readable and to accompany people along paths of care more aware, without forcings or simplifications.
