Iran and Gaza at the center of talks between Trump and Netanyahu at the White House

WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – “The meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was an excellent interview and the extraordinary relationship between our two countries continues.” So the President of the United States Donald Trump on Truth, at the end of the summit lasted almost three hours at the White House with the Israeli premier, explaining that he insisted on the need to continue negotiations with Iran to verify the possibility of reaching an agreement. “If this is possible, it will be my preference. Otherwise, we will see what will be the outcome.”.

Trump also recalled the past tensions with Tehran, hoping for a “more reasonable and responsible” attitude, and spoke of “big progress” on Gaza and, more generally, of a situation of peace in the Middle East. The closed-door meeting in the Oval Studio between Trump and Netanyahu took place in a climate of strong political attention and strengthened security, while outside the White House dozens of protesters expressed their disagreement.

It was the fifth visit of the Israeli Premier to the White House since the beginning of Trump’s second presidential term. Following Lafayette Square, in the street in front of the presidential residence, groups of demonstrators gathered together with signs and slogans against the bilateral summit.

Some protesters, wearing masks depicting Netanyahu, staged symbolic protests, while others paraded with Palestinian banners and flags, chanting choirs to the megaphone. To constantly monitor the situation the men of secret services, who for the whole day raised the level of security around the presidential complex, bounded by massive black barriers especially in the area of Blair House, the official residence for state guests.

From the office of Prime Minister Netanyahu, they said that “during the meeting they discussed negotiations with Iran, Gaza and regional developments. The Prime Minister underlined the security needs of the State of Israel in the context of the negotiations and the two leaders agreed to continue coordination and maintain close contacts among themselves.”.

The visit is part of a delicate diplomatic context. Last week U.S. officials had held indirect talks with Iranian negotiators in Oman, in an attempt to relaunch a negotiating path on nuclear power. At the same time, press indiscretions reported Washington’s assessment of further naval deployments in the Middle East, a scenario that feeds fears of escalation if negotiations were to fail.

Trump has recently defined talks with Tehran “different” than previous ones, meaning openings on an agreement focused mainly on nuclear. Iran, for its part, has reiterated that it does not want to extend the negotiation beyond this scope or renounce its right to enrich uranium.
