ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The real goal of the Israeli-American attack on Iran is to impress the regime and “really to support a change of direction, which does not mean changing the regime in toto.” It is the opinion of Giorgio Cuzzelli, professor of Security and strategic studies at the Lumsa University of Rome, interviewed by the Italpress agency.
“It was a question of inducing Iranian leadership to more mild councils to arrive, evidently, at a negotiation. The military instrument currently in the field, essentially of aeronaval type, is not a tool able to support a long-term effort and above all is not able to support a resolute effort. To do that we need troops, men on the ground, which neither the United States nor others have the slightest intention to do,” said Cuzzelli, who hypothesizes “subbanco tracts carried out for a long time”, with parts of the Iranian leadership “who could try to otherwise direct their state’s policy”.
According to the teacher of Lumsa, in order to follow the trend of the situation it is necessary first to see how the Israeli and American attacks will be able to weaken the regime.
“For the moment, they are succeeding us well,” he commented, adding that the attack could last “maybe a week, 10 days” against a fierce opponent in his defensive structure. “The Iranian theocracy has built over the years a ‘distance’ defence to ensure the security of the country outside its borders, through three cornerstones,” explained Cuzzelli.
“The first is the pursuit of a nuclear capacity, and this capacity, likely, will never happen again. The second term is the availability of long-range weapons, basically missiles and drones. Now he used them, but not in the numbers we had seen on the occasion of the so-called 12-day war in June, because this time there was an incredible preparation ‘antimissile and anti-dron’ by the United States and the Israelis’, continued the teacher of Lumsa.
“The third line of defence is represented by proxies, proximity agents who on behalf of Iran had the intention of bringing ‘offess to enemies’ away from the country’s borders. But there was very little. Hezbollah was substantially neutralized, at least for the moment, by a series of Israeli preventive attacks in the southern part of Lebanon that have lasted for weeks. Hamas is reduced to the smallest terms, and I think he is fighting a desperate battle to survive against his own population, which he probably no longer wants to hear about. Regarding the Houthi, they do not have the forces and means to block the Hormuz Strait on the long term. An effort, this, which at the moment is not able to do even the Iranian Navy”, concluded Cuzzelli.
