TEHERAN (IRAN) (ITALPRESS) – Despite the positive atmosphere that marked yesterday the indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States in Geneva, some red lines remain firm and invariable between the two sides. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian clearly reiterated that Tehran “does not pursue nuclear weapons in any way, but will never renounce nuclear industry for peaceful purposes.” In a television interview broadcast by local media, Pezeshkian said: “We are ready for any verification mechanism that the United States considers necessary to ensure the peaceful nature of our nuclear programme.” He added: “Nowhere are we trying to equip ourselves with nuclear weapons.”.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, at the end of a three-hour meeting at the headquarters of the permanent mission of the Sultanate of Oman in Geneva, commented: “The path to an understanding has begun and we are ready.” But he said: “This does not mean that an agreement has already been reached.” Araghchi has announced the agreement on “guide principles” and has described the discussions as “constructive”, while noting that the drafting of a definitive text will still take time.

The Government of Iran has stated that it is advancing on two parallel and complementary fronts: nuclear negotiations indirect with the United States and the maintenance of a very high level of military readiness. In an official note released today by the government spokesman, Tehran stressed that “ Diplomatic negotiations and defensive preparation proceed hand in hand and without any contradiction.” The specific statement that “the regular army (Artesh), the Guard Corps of the Islamic Revolution (Pasdaran) and the other members of the armed forces are currently in a state of maximum alert, in full coincidence with the conduct of talks in Geneva”.
According to the statement, this posture of utmost vigilance “does not conflict with the desire to reach a diplomatic agreement, but constitutes the necessary guarantee of security”. The Iranian government reiterated that “negotiating from a credible force position is the only way to achieve concrete results and to discourage any temptation to unilateral solutions or military threats.” The note arrives a few hours after the caute but positive statements of President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who described the Geneva round as “constructive” and announced the agreement on some “guide principles”, while noting that the road to a definitive understanding remains long and complex.
Sources close to the Supremo National Security Council have confirmed the start of surprise exercises of missile units and air defense in various regions of the country, along with a strengthening of naval surveillance in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The spokesman concluded that “the Islamic Republic pursues with determination a responsible diplomacy, but will never allow sovereignty and national security to be put at risk.”.
