ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian gave instructions to Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to pursue “equivalent and balanced” negotiations with the United States, provided that an appropriate environment is created, free from threats and unreasonable expectations. In a post published today on X, Pezeshkian stated: “I have instructed our Foreign Minister, provided that there is a suitable environment, free of threats and unreasonable claims, to pursue fair and balanced negotiations, guided by the principles of dignity, wisdom and national interest.” The President pointed out that this decision was taken “in the light of the demands of friendly governments in the region to respond to the proposal of the US President to start negotiations.”.
This is Tehran’s first clear indication of a possible participation in talks, which could be organized under Turkish mediation in Istanbul next Friday. Some official Iranian agencies had reported yesterday a Pezeshkian order in Araqchi to start negotiations with the United States, but the dispatch was subsequently withdrawn without explanation.
In the meantime, the Russian Foreign Ministry today called American proposals to Tehran as “final ultimatum”. Iranian and American officials confirmed yesterday that nuclear talks will resume on Friday in Turkey. President Donald Trump warned that “bad things” could happen if an agreement is not reached, mentioning the sending of great American warships to Iran. The meeting should see the involvement of the US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi in Istanbul, with the aim of relaunching diplomacy on the Iranian nuclear program and averaging the risk of a new regional war. According to the Reuters agency, representatives of countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt will also participate. The move comes in a context of increasing tensions between the two countries, aggravated by US military deployment in the Gulf, as Washington defines “violent repression of anti-government protests” last month in Iran, the most serious since the 1979 revolution. Trump asked Tehran for significant concessions on the nuclear program, as well as restrictions on the ballistic missile program.
