ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi is expected today in Washington for a meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance and other senior American officials, in an attempt to prevent military escalation with Iran and relaunch the prospects for a nuclear deal. The meeting, not previously announced, immediately follows the conclusion yesterday in Geneva of the third round of indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran, defined by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as “the most intense so far”.
Araghchi reported on X that he had recorded “new progress” in the diplomatic process with Washington, even without reaching a definitive understanding. The omanita al-Busaidi mediator, who facilitated discussions in Switzerland, praised the opening of both parties to examine innovative ideas. In a post on X at the end of the Geneva consultations, he announced that the parties intend to resume talks after consultations in their respective capitals (Tehran and Washington), with a technical session scheduled next week in Vienna. Despite these positive signs, the negotiations ended yesterday without a substantial agreement, maintaining high tension in the region.
President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened military actions against Iran in the event of a diplomacy failure, including the possibility of hitting the nuclear program, and strengthened the US military presence in the waters close to Iran with a massive concentration of naval and air forces. The American administration insists that talks include not only nuclear, but also the Iranian ballistic missile program and Tehran’s support to armed groups in the region – issues that Tehran considers red lines. The role of Muscat as a reliable communication channel between the two parties remains crucial in this delicate phase, with the aim of avoiding a conflict that many fear could degenerate into a wider regional war. Today’s meeting between Al-Busaidi and Vance is an urgent attempt to keep the diplomatic channel alive before any drastic decisions by the White House.
