PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – For the first time in Sicily, seven transplants were performed in a single day at Ismett. A record event that allowed seven Sicilian patients to return to new hope for a better quality of life. In a 24-hour surgical marathon, the following were performed: four kidney transplants; two liver transplants; and one lung transplant. This historic milestone for Sicilian health care mobilized more than 40 Ismett professionals including physicians, nurses and health care personnel who worked tirelessly. To these must be added the doctors of the resuscitations involved and the staff of the Regional Transplant Center who coordinated the organizational machine of the donation. “Special thanks go to all the professionals involved and best wishes to the patients and their families. The seven transplants carried out at the same time,” said Angelo Luca, Director of Ismett, “represent an extraordinary result, made possible thanks to the synergic collaboration of all the players in the Sicilian transplant network. Ismett, once again, confirms itself as a center of healthcare excellence: results of this magnitude are possible thanks to an impeccable organization and the commitment of extraordinary and highly qualified professionals. The year 2024 is confirmed as a record year for Ismett, with more than 300 organ transplants performed. Ministry of Health data on IRCCSs show that Ismett ranks first in Italy for its ability to attract international patients. To be chosen by patients from other countries as a point of reference for transplants and highly specialized care is a concrete testimony to the success of the International Public-Private Partnership between the Sicilian Region and UPMC, consolidating Ismett as a globally recognized healthcare excellence. “The two retrievals, which restored hope to seven patients on the waiting list, were performed at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania and Partinico Hospital. The record-breaking day began at dawn Nov. 27 with an initial alert at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, where the Ismett team harvested 2 kidneys and liver. Shortly thereafter, a second alert at Partinico Hospital resulted in the retrieval of lungs, 2 kidneys, and liver. The surgeries were all technically successful and the clinical conditions of the transplanted patients are considered good. “During this year,” emphasizes Giorgio Battaglia, director of the Regional Transplant Center (CRT), “an unthinkable number of transplants were performed in our island, unthinkable until a few years ago. The exceptionality of seven transplants in a single day confirms the generosity of Sicilians and the excellence of our Transplant System both in quality and in process safety. We continue to propose the culture of donation, a victory for modern medicine and a victory for the entire Regional Health System. Thanks to IRCCS Ismett and all those involved in the system, when a system like this with interconnected personalities works it means that healthcare works.”
