WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended by three weeks. This was announced by US President Donald J. Trump, at the end of a meeting at the White House with high-level representatives of the two countries, held on Thursday in the Oval Studio. The summit follows a new phase of diplomatic contacts between the parties: it is the second high-level negotiation over a week. On April 16, a 10-day initial fire had been announced, which entered into force last Friday to stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah and initially scheduled on Monday. “The meeting went very well,” Trump said on the Truth Social platform, adding that “the United States will work with Lebanon to help him protect himself from Hezbollah.”.
The president also stated that he will host “in the near future” to the White House Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The meeting was attended by Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee. Huckabee, in the margin of the talks, used a metaphor to describe the tensions in the region: he compared Hezbollah to “a boy who throws stones”, stressing that “the people of Lebanon and that of Israel want to get along” and that cohabitation would be possible “if the child stopped throwing stones”.
On the Israeli side, U.S. Ambassador Yechiel Leiter said that Israel and Lebanon “have never been as close as today,” thanking Trump and Vice President Vance for a definite step “in the future for decades.” “We will go on, working for peace. We hope to get it as soon as possible,” he added. The Lebanese ambassador in the United States Nada Hamadeh Moawad thanked Trump for having presided over “this historic moment”, expressing confidence that, with American support, “Lebanon can return great”.
