GERUSALEMME (ISRAELE) (ITALPRESS) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes that the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza “beyond the end” and expects “to move to the second stage soon”. Netanyahu himself said this in a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is now visiting Jerusalem.
Netanyahu added that “peace opportunities are at hand” after Israeli military operations severely hit the Iranian axis with operations in Gaza, Lebanon and the Islamic Republic. “I will discuss this with President Trump when I meet him later this month,” he said, pointing out that he will discuss “how to end the Hamas government in Gaza, because it is an essential element to ensure a different future.”.
The Israeli Prime Minister then recognized that he was in “disagreement” on one point with the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, or on the idea of a Palestinian state that he would, in his opinion, “impeed to destroy us at home”. “We have a different view, of course, because the purpose of a Palestinian state is to destroy the only and only Jewish state,” said Netanyahu in the joint press conference.
The premier finally specified that Israel will maintain security between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, observing that the annexation of the West Bank remains subject to discussion and that the status quo will remain unchanged in the near future.
The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, arrived in Israel on the evening of yesterday. After being welcomed at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Merz was received by President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem.
Today, after the two-way interview with Netanyahu, an enlarged meeting will be held at the Prime Minister’s office with Defense Minister Israel Katz, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, interim national security advisor Gil Reich, General Director of Defense Ministry Amir Baram and their ambassadors from the two countries.
