Istat, in February +47 thousand employed and unemployment drops to 5.9%

ROME (ITALPRESS) – In February, compared with the previous month, growth in the employed and inactive was associated with a decrease in the unemployed. The number of employed people, according to Istat data, rose to 24 million 332 thousand. The growth from the previous month involves the self-employed, which rose to 5 million 170 thousand, and term employees (2 million 710 thousand), while permanent employees (16 million 451 thousand) are essentially stable. The increase in employment (+0.2 percent, or +47 thousand) involves women, term employees, the self-employed and all age groups with the exception of 25-34 year olds for whom, as is the case for men, the number of employed decreases.

The employment rate rises to 63.0 percent (+0.1 points). The decline in job seekers (-4.9% or -79 thousand) affects men, women and all age groups. The unemployment rate falls to 5.9% (-0.3 points), the youth rate to 16.9% (-1.4 points). The growth in the inactive (+0.3 percent, or +33 thousand) involves men and 25-34 year olds in contrast to a decline among women and in the other age groups with the exception of 15-24 year olds, for whom there is substantial stability.

The inactivity rate rises to 32.9% (+0.1 points). Comparing the December 2024-February 2025 quarter with the previous quarter (September-November 2024), there is an increase of 199 thousand employed people (+0.8%). The growth in employment, observed in the quarterly comparison, is associated with an increase in job seekers (+2.0%, or +32 thousand) and a decrease in the inactive (-1.7%, or -208 thousand).

In February, the number of employed people exceeds that of the same month in 2024 by 2.4 percent (+567 thousand); the increase affects men, women, 15-24 year olds and those aged 50 and over, while a decrease is observed for those aged 25-49. The employment rate, in one year, rises by 1.1 percentage points. Compared with February 2024, both the number of job seekers (-18.4 percent, or -342 thousand) and the number of inactive 15-64 year olds (-0.5 percent, or -60 thousand) decrease.
